IST is a single-terminal airport, but that terminal is among the largest in the world. In practice this means a lounge's location inside the terminal can matter more than which lounge it is. Walking from one end to the other can take 15–20 minutes, and that walk can cancel out all the comfort you gained during a short stay.

Lounges fall into two groups: airline lounges (open only to that airline's business/status passengers) and independent lounges (open to every passenger, with one-time entry available for purchase). For a traveller on an economy ticket, the second group is the realistic option.

Domestic vs international sides

At IST, domestic and international lounges sit in separate zones with no passage between them — passport control physically divides the two. 1. Complete check-in and collect your boarding pass.
2. Pass through security screening.
3. For international flights, also pass through passport control.

5. Show your boarding pass and lounge entry pass at reception.

It makes sense to head to the lounge after you learn your gate number: only then can you judge which lounge is close to your gate.

When is a lounge worth it at IST?

Situations where lounge access most clearly pays off at Istanbul Airport:

• Long layovers — IST is a busy transfer hub; for waits over 4 hours, the shower and rest areas alone justify the entry.
• Early-morning international flights— part of the terminal's shops and restaurants are closed while the lounge is open.
• Travelling with children — finding seats in the terminal is hard at peak hours.
• Working before your flight — a quiet corner and a desk are not something the open terminal offers.

In a terminal as large as IST, evaluate in this order: distance to your gate, stay-time limit, how crowded it is at your hour, and the menu. As a rule of thumb, comfort at the right location beats a marginally better buffet a 20-minute walk away.
